Thaddeus "Thad" Gray

Immortal

The Basics

Birth: 1874, LondonAge Now: Stuck at 22, real age is 149 as of 2023Appearance: He's got a bit of a baby face that he can use to his advantage. He can make himself appear anywhere from age 18 up to 30 depending on what persona he's going for at any given time. He has naturally brown hair that goes curly if he lets it grow out long, a sharp jawline but otherwise soft features considering everything he's been through. He stands at roughly 5'11" so not too tall, but he has a thin, lanky sort of build that makes him appear taller. He's thin but not particularly in shape given his more lazy demeanor since being freed from captivity.Personality: Sarcasm is his favorite tool. He can be whiney or downright pouty if made to do things he doesn't want to do, and usually has a dry or witty comment up his sleeve somewhere for any occasion, but he's also silly and hyperactive. He is loyal and generally likes to help people to the point where he doesn't know what to do with himself if he isn't needed. He's got a lot of self worth issues from his previous traumas and has unhealthy coping mechanisms.

The Curse

Thad was born in 1874 during Dorian's sleeping around days. He didn't know his father personally but did know of him - no, Dorian wasn't as horrible as ol' Oscar made him out to be, but he wasn't a great man either. Did he kill Basil, the friend who painted the legendary portrait? Yes, but it actually happened in a drunken brawl at a pub with plenty of witnesses who would go on to declare that Basil had struck Dorian first. They went a few rounds, Basil tripped and cracked his head open on the bar. Nothing so glamorous as in the novel. What was also wrong in the novel was that Dorian's death was no accident. He knew full well what would happen if he stabbed that painting. He was lonely, depressed and wanted to die, plain and simple. Oscar heard of the tale and embellished it to make it far more romantic for its time, which was unfortunate for Thad.See, Basil had a daughter in real life - Lena. She was a little off her rocker and never forgave Dorian for her father's death. Being able to prove that the portrait was her father's original art, she was able to inherit it before it could go to auction. Thad also happened to show up that same day to try to prove he was Dorian's son and therefore should inherit the man's wealth, but naturally so did several other young men who just wanted a share of the pot. It was no secret that the man had gotten around, after all.Lena, however, recognized Dorian in Thad's features and claimed she could prove he was the rightful heir. Since she was Basil's child, her word would hold value in the dispute. She convinced Thad and the authorities that she had developed her father's skill with the brush, and that all she had to do was paint a few of Thad's features over the original portrait of Dorian and they would all see that the features were so similar that he would have to be Dorian's son. They agreed, she sat him down and right there in front of the public, made only a few very minor adjustments to the original Dorian - sharpened the cheeks, darkened the hair, softened the eyes - and voila! The portrait was now one of Thaddeus. It earned Thad his inheritance, but what he didn't know was that Lena had also cursed him in that moment to suffer a worse fate than his father. She had known exactly what she'd been doing while painting that portrait, and she used it to force him to be her personal slave.

The Captive

Lena was a cruel woman, but not completely wretched. She did not force Thad to wed her or sleep with her, nothing of that sort. She didn't try to outright steal his wealth, but she did demand he use it to get them passage around the world. And, of course, to buy her exotic and expensive things. She used him as more of a personal chauffeur and bodyguard than as any sort of makeshift boyfriend, but otherwise gave him freedoms to do as he pleased as long as he stayed close by and came immediately if called upon. If he got out of line at any point, she would whisk off to wherever it was that she kept the portrait hidden - always in a different place while they traveled around - and would slash at it or burn bits of it, essentially using it as her own version of a voodoo doll. He had to comply, or he would be tortured. Once he was good, she would repair the painting so that he could be functional to her again. This went on for years. They spent quite a bit of time in America, particularly during the Prohibition era, delving into the criminal life a bit to add to their dwindling funds. Dorian's money wouldn't last forever, after all, not with as much as Lena enjoyed first class travel and her expensive trinkets. They were most certainly no Bonnie and Clyde (Lena had just turned 40 by this point, after all), but in that age in the criminal underworld? Blood was spilled a few times by Thad's hands. His own too if he was forced to be used as a human bullet shield. It hurt like hell, but real bullets couldn't kill him, not unless they were fired at the portrait. He was immortal in every way otherwise, and Lena used his body as she saw fit to keep her own out of danger. This went on for several more years, and while Lena had many a suitor that came and went, she was never able to bear children. Thus she had no one to pass her gifts onto, no one to inherit the portrait (and thus no one to pass Thad onto) as she moved up in age. Still, she kept it hidden, always out of sight, out of reach of Thad's hands until one day, tired and not as stealthy as she was in her youth, Lena slipped up. Thad was able to discover the whereabouts of the portrait and snuck in after the aging woman had gone to bed, successfully (albeit clumsily and not without some shruggable injury considering it was under armed guard) made off with it into the night. He left Lena without ever looking bad - a bitter, sarcastic and cynical man now, but not a murderer by choice even after all the violence - and very nearly decided to end his eternal torment and destroy the painting like his father had done before him, but changed his mind at the last minute. He'd been all over the world, lived an entire lifespan, but had never really lived. It was time to have a life of his own.

The Current

No longer belonging to any particular country after all his years of travel, Thad continued to move around the world, visiting areas he either liked but didn't see much of during his time with Lena, or sightseeing in new countries altogether. His accent became a hodgepodge of all the different languages he had picked up, and his persona was ever-changing as he bounced from one place to another. He watched the world change around him, watched technologies grow and lifespans extend but ultimately still fade out, sat outside the battlefields as wars waged, disappeared in solitude when everything got to be too much, then eventually would get bored and come back as a different man, ready to experience something new.In the current time, Thad uses his body in the best way he knows how - offering it up for service to those who need a violent outlet (or a snack) so that innocents don't have to fall victim to such things. He loves dancing with death, the feel of his body meeting its end until it heals and he comes back sluggish and heavy. He gets paid for these services, calling himself a "murder hooker" for lack of a better word. He has strict rules that aftercare must be provided, and the more damage done to his body the more the client pays. He does not do strangulation or asphyxiation play generally, he has phobias about drowning or being buried alive where he revives, suffocates to death again, revives again, etc, in an endless loop. Otherwise anything flies. His favorite clients are the ones who like knives or drug play.Thad does not heal instantly. His healing time depends on the level of damage done, hence the higher charge. If the client is willing to stitch him up after then the healling time will go down, and the price can be negotiated. For reference, if he slices his palm open it'll heal in about the time it takes for a kettle to boil. He had his head blown off once and it took several weeks for it to grow back enough for him to wake up, but more weeks before he was fully functional again. A good gutting where all the parts are at least shoved back in will take a full 24 hours to heal from.(Depending on the verse he can either be into pain, in which he may use drugs to dull it some so he doesn't pass out during sessions; or in his main rp verse he also has a bracelet that was made for him with magical stones, one of which prevents him from feeling pain. He can feel pressure and heat/cold, pinching, tugging, etc, but it doesn't actually hurt him.)
